LOOK!  A BIRD!!   Deep East Texas is described as a birder's paradise and Polk County is filled with favorite locations for enjoying this pastime.  They say you can't look anywhere without seeing or hearing a bird of some kind nearby.  A few of the sites in Polk County to enjoy bird watching include Longleaf Pines Trail and Bull Creek Trail in the Corrigan area and the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation as well as Lake Livingston.
One of the most favorite places enjoyed by birding enthusiasts is around Lake Livingston and especially at the base of the dam spillway.  There you can find a variety of birds including the American White Pelican.

Another birding site that you don't want to miss is the American Bald Eagle.  They can often be seen swooping the top of the water on Lake Livingston in search of their prey.

The Pineywoods Bird and Bloom Club is a great group to join to learn more about the many varieties of birds we have here in Polk County.

Along with birding, you will enjoy many of the hiking, biking and paddling trails throughout the county.  An amazing visit with nature can be enjoyed on any of the trails and it's not uncommon to see Deer, Red Fox or any number of other wildlife creatures along the way.  Be sure to include the Big Thicket in your trails, as this is one of the most diverse ecological systems in the nation.  Be the first to join our new Master Naturalist Chapter forming now in Polk County.  There's plenty to do outside in paradise!

While you are out and about, visit the Polk County Museum and enjoy a stroll through Heritage Park in Livingston.  Learn about the history and days of long ago by visiting over a dozen Historical Markers throughout the county. Two sites, the Polk County Courthouse and the Courthouse Annex, were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in early 2001.  One interesting marker is the Birthplace of Margo Jones who established theater-in-the-round, now a popular method in theatres around the world. Or, enjoy an evening of music on the Courthouse Square at the Gazebo compliments of the Community Band.

If you prefer the indoors, there are a number of ways to spend your leisure time.  Corrigan, Livingston and Onalaska each have a Senior Community Center where visitors enjoy playing favorite games like Skip-Bo, 42, Chicken Foot and Bingo.  There are also a number of groups that meet on a regular basis that offer a variety of activities and interests.  Or, take in a movie at the historical Fain Theater.  Any way you look at it, Polk County has a lot to offer.
